Special Interception: Modernia

This guide is specific to Special Interception: Modernia.

General Tips

  1. The highest priority for this fight is destroying her core ASAP. When Modernia’s core is present, she will use a laser beam attack that deals high damage and stuns any units directly hit. To ensure your AI-controlled units will focus Modernia’s core rather than her wings, only skip after Modernia’s face is shown in her intro animation.
  2. The second important note is to avoid breaking both of her wings. When both her wings are destroyed, Modernia enters a teleporting phase and fires down high damage, high speed missiles that are difficult to defend against and causes a significant DPS loss.
  3. As Modernia’s projectiles are highly telegraphed and all land at the same time, it is possible to i-frame her projectiles and otherwise ignore them. To read more about how i-framing works in Modernia SI, check out this page.
  4. Another tips is to destroy one of her two wings to reduce her damage, but this runs a risk that your other units controlled by AI may break the second wing if their DPS is too high.
  5. A healer is highly recommended to have a smoother and less frustrating run, taking into account Modernia’s machine gun damage that is unavoidable and failing to i-frame bombs damage.
  6. For this fight, place your 3 highest DPS units on the same side and control your highest DPS unit to manually aim at Modernia’s body. This will avoid both wings from being broken.

1st/2nd rotation

This section of the guide assumes that it’s your first/second time fighting Modernia in SI, and therefore has weaker gears (no full T9), which leads to not having enough DPS to break core or full clear. Therefore, riskier moves (fully i-framing all 6 bombs) and certain units that are very effective in breaking Modernia’s core (Snow White, Alice) have to be used to achieve full clear. (If you are content with lower stage rewards and just want an easier run, skip this section and move here.)

General Steps

  1. Skip after Modernia’s face is shown in her intro animation, which will cause your AI controlled units to aim at her core. Control your highest DPS unit and aim at the core as well. Activate burst as soon as burst gauge is ready and continue aiming at her core.
  2. As soon as Modernia fires her laser, take cover until the laser attack is over. Modernia will then fire 6 bombs after she finishes her laser attack. To maximize damage and break core, i-frame all 6 bombs and continue aiming at her core. As soon as your burst is ready again, activate burst and break her core.
  3. Modernia will now begin to act a cycle of: Firing 6 bombs>Moving forward>Fires machine gun>Moving backwards. You should time AOE burst to clear bombs, and either clear the bombs manually or i-frame them when AOE burst is on cooldown.
  4. You should seek to destroy the wing that is on the same side you place all your DPS units ASAP. This will allow you to deal with only 3 bombs, and there is very low risk of both wings being destroyed since you are using weaker gears and your DPS units are on the other side.
  5. Repeat step 3 until the fight ends.

Team Composition

For this particular SI, the recommended teams are only to give you ideas to start with. Your highest priority is to build a team that can break Modernia’s core before she fires a second laser. For example, lets imagine you have a highly invested Brid with Bond 30 and 8/8/8 skill levels, and a Drake with Bond 1 and 1/1/1 skill levels. If you fail to break core with Drake in team, you should try using the highly invested Brid even though the guide here recommends Drake and did not mention Brid.

The two teams below are designed for players who only have T8 and 1-3 T9 gears but want to stage 8/9 Modernia on their first or second rotation of SI. With full DPS, you should have an easier time breaking core using this team. However, since there is no healing, you would need near 100% success rate on i-framing bombs when your AOE burst is on cooldown, and good RNG to avoid Modernia’s machine gun attack from landing on the same target repeatedly and killing one of your units.

Once you have enough T9 gears, you can replace Drake with a unit that provides healing such as Rapunzel, Helm and Soda.

Snow White Full DPS

This team relies on Snow White’s high burst damage to break Modernia’s core. Viper/Rupee can replace Guilty.

The core unit for this team is Snow White (SW). Your goal is to use SW’s burst as your first burst in fight and break Modernia’s core ASAP. A good tip here is to NOT charge SW’s burst above 800% as Liter’s buff may expire, resulting in much lower damage. Refer to the steps above for an idea of how the fight should be played.

This team relies on Alice’s high DPS to break Modernia’s core.

The core units for this team are Alice and Admi. Admi provides reload speed for Alice, and Alice provides huge DPS in short time. Your goal is to use Alice’s burst as your burst in fight and break Modernia’s core ASAP. You might want to manually control Alice and quick tap to build up burst gauge faster, which allows you to activate burst earlier. Refer to the steps above for an idea of how the fight should be played.

3rd rotation and beyond

This section of the guide assumes that it’s at least your third time fighting Modernia in SI, and therefore has stronger gears (couple of T9 especially attackers T9). You should have more than enough DPS to break Modernia’s core before she fires a second laser, and wants survivability to reduce reliance on good RNG to clear consistently and save time. Therefore, a healer should be included in your team.

To have an easier time, you should clear 3 bombs on one side and attempt to i-frame the remaining 3 bombs. Even if you fail to i-frame, all units should be able to survive, otherwise retry. As soon as your burst is ready again, activate burst and break her core.
  3. Modernia will now begin to act a cycle of: Firing 6 bombs>Moving forward>Fires machine gun>Moving backwards. You should time AOE burst to clear bombs, and follow step 2 to deal with bombs when AOE burst is on cooldown. When you are not dealing with bombs, control your highest DPS unit and damage Modernia’s body. (Avoid breaking both wings, otherwise she enters into teleport mode.)
  4. Repeat step 3 until the fight ends.

Team Composition

The general rule for the team compositions in this section is 1 healer, 1 CDR buffer and 3 DPS units. The DPS units are very flexible, and you should always use your strongest DPS units even if they are not mentioned by the guide. As long as you are able to break Modernia’s core, your team will do fine.

The core units for this team composition are Pepper and Dolla. Pepper provides healing, while Dolla is the only B2 with cooldown reduction, which allows you to activate another burst rotation to break Modernia’s core before Modernia fires a second laser.

The remaining 3 units should be the best DPS units you have. Scarlet is the best option with her high single target damage and AOE burst to clear bombs, Modernia provides great DPS and Drake provides good DPS and burst generation being a shotgun unit.

The core units for this team are Liter and Rapunzel. Rapunzel provides healing, while Liter acts as the CDR and ATK buffer. You should always activate Liter’s burst and only use Rapunzel’s burst when one of your units is down.

Volume can replace Liter, but you will need better skills and gears on your DPS units to account for the weaker buffs. Soda can replace Rapunzel, although Soda has lower healing. Only use Liter/Volume’s burst when you have Soda in team.

Guilty, Viper and Rupee are the top options for B2 since they provide good DPS, but any other 20s B2 works too if your DPS units have enough damage to full clear already.

Scarlet’s burst could have been timed better for 2nd burst rotation to clear bombs. It is recommended to clear 3 bombs and i-frame the remaining 3 bombs, perfectly i-framing all 6 bombs as demonstrated here is not easy.

The core and irreplaceable unit for this team is Noise. Noise provides survivability by taunting the machine gun and bombs which have to be i-framed. There are 2 ways of using Noise.

The 1st method is manual control Noise for the whole fight. Therefore, putting high DPS units on 1 side is needed to avoid breaking both wings. Controlling Noise, you should fully charge an attack and release it right as Modernia’s wings snaps back to i-frame the bombs. Refer to the 1st video below.

The 2nd method is to control your highest DPS character and aim at Modernia’s body to lower chances of breaking both wings. When the bombs are about to land on Noise, switch to Noise to i-frame the bombs. Refer to the 2nd video below.

  1. I just open SII is her laser timing just pure RNG or she wont do it if you reach certain damage threshold after certain time? Modernia just use laser 2 times and I instantly dead

    • If you need more damage to full clear, Scarlet, Modernia, basically any high single target DPS, don’t use Harran because she’s bad in single boss fights.
If you are unable to break core, Alice/Snow White/Maxwell are the best options if you invested decently in them

  2. Hello!
I want to thank author of this guide!
It’s my first stage 8 in Special Interception (In Blacksmith, Chatterbox I reached only stage 7).

My strongest attackers is Modernia, Drake and Rupee (I don’t have Snow White, Scarlett or Alice).
So in battle I went like this: Liter (T8, Bond Lvl 10), XAnne (T8, Blvl 22) Drake (One T9, others T8, Blvl 20) , Modernia (two T9, two T8, Blvl 29), Rupee (t8, blvl 20).
XAnne I took for Atk buff and healing.
So, all Nikkes was alive the whole battle (except Rupee, she died but thank to Anne, she resurrected later).
For first battle I tried to use Modernia’s Burst, but damage was not enough to break a core, so in next time I use Drake’s Burst, and everything worked out, core was broken.

Total damage was 59 m, very little left to 62 m. I hope in next time I reach stage 9.

And finally, I want to thank everyone who worked on all the guides here. It takes enough time to read and understand all the guides here, but you’ve spent even more time researching and writing about all this info. So, thank you very much everyone for the work!

    • Cause Viper Lower Defense up to 20% and increase Allies attack up to 26%/Hit Rate 11% when target appears. She is amazing for Single Boss Fights.

  3. Nice guide. If you’re struggling to keep a wing intact near the end, try playing in vertical mode.

I almost cleared Modernia with T7-T8 gear at +3-4 gear levels but I kept wiping when the AI targeted and destroyed the remaining wing.

I tried it again today, but I switched the settings so that the game played in vertical mode and found that the AI were less likely to target the wing when it was out of frame. This allowed me to keep a wing intact and clear Modernia without transitioning phases.
