Special Interception: Modernia

This guide is specific to Special Interception: Modernia.

General Tips

  1. The highest priority for this fight is destroying her core ASAP. When Modernia’s core is present, she will use a laser beam attack that deals high damage and stuns any units directly hit. To ensure your AI-controlled units will focus Modernia’s core rather than her wings, only skip after Modernia’s face is shown in her intro animation.
  2. The second important note is to avoid breaking both of her wings. When both her wings are destroyed, Modernia enters a teleporting phase and fires down high damage, high speed missiles that are difficult to defend against and causes a significant DPS loss.
  3. As Modernia’s projectiles are highly telegraphed and all land at the same time, it is possible to i-frame her projectiles and otherwise ignore them. To read more about how i-framing works in Modernia SI, check out this page.
  4. Another tips is to destroy one of her two wings to reduce her damage, but this runs a risk that your other units controlled by AI may break the second wing if their DPS is too high.
  5. A healer is highly recommended to have a smoother and less frustrating run, taking into account Modernia’s machine gun damage that is unavoidable and failing to i-frame bombs damage.
  6. For this fight, place your 3 highest DPS units on the same side and control your highest DPS unit to manually aim at Modernia’s body. This will avoid both wings from being broken.

1st/2nd rotation

This section of the guide assumes that it’s your first/second time fighting Modernia in SI, and therefore has weaker gears (no full T9), which leads to not having enough DPS to break core or full clear. Therefore, riskier moves (fully i-framing all 6 bombs) and certain units that are very effective in breaking Modernia’s core (Snow White, Alice) have to be used to achieve full clear. (If you are content with lower stage rewards and just want an easier run, skip this section and move here.)

General Steps

  1. Skip after Modernia’s face is shown in her intro animation, which will cause your AI controlled units to aim at her core. Control your highest DPS unit and aim at the core as well. Activate burst as soon as burst gauge is ready and continue aiming at her core.
  2. As soon as Modernia fires her laser, take cover until the laser attack is over. Modernia will then fire 6 bombs after she finishes her laser attack. To maximize damage and break core, i-frame all 6 bombs and continue aiming at her core. As soon as your burst is ready again, activate burst and break her core.
  3. Modernia will now begin to act a cycle of: Firing 6 bombs>Moving forward>Fires machine gun>Moving backwards. You should time AOE burst to clear bombs, and either clear the bombs manually or i-frame them when AOE burst is on cooldown.
  4. You should seek to destroy the wing that is on the same side you place all your DPS units ASAP. This will allow you to deal with only 3 bombs, and there is very low risk of both wings being destroyed since you are using weaker gears and your DPS units are on the other side.
  5. Repeat step 3 until the fight ends.

Team Composition

For this particular SI, the recommended teams are only to give you ideas to start with. Your highest priority is to build a team that can break Modernia’s core before she fires a second laser. For example, lets imagine you have a highly invested Brid with Bond 30 and 8/8/8 skill levels, and a Drake with Bond 1 and 1/1/1 skill levels. If you fail to break core with Drake in team, you should try using the highly invested Brid even though the guide here recommends Drake and did not mention Brid.

The two teams below are designed for players who only have T8 and 1-3 T9 gears but want to stage 8/9 Modernia on their first or second rotation of SI. With full DPS, you should have an easier time breaking core using this team. However, since there is no healing, you would need near 100% success rate on i-framing bombs when your AOE burst is on cooldown, and good RNG to avoid Modernia’s machine gun attack from landing on the same target repeatedly and killing one of your units.

Once you have enough T9 gears, you can replace Drake with a unit that provides healing such as Rapunzel, Helm and Soda.

This team relies on Snow White’s high burst damage to break Modernia’s core.

Dorothy is a decent replacement for Liter as her S1 during burst allows the entire team to do extra damage to parts (which helps to break core faster). Dorothy has to be paired with Privaty though, to ensure that cooldown rotates fast enough.

Best B2 is Blanc but she has to be paired with Noir. (Do NOT use only 1 of them) Guilty is the 2nd best B2 choice and can be replaced by Viper/Rupee.

Modernia is the best B3 here since she deals great DPS without having to use burst, and she helps to clear bombs if you are not able to i-frame all of them. Scarlet is a good replacement if using Blanc and Noir, otherwise use Drake instead.

The core unit for this team is Snow White (SW). Your goal is to use SW’s burst as your first burst in fight and break Modernia’s core ASAP. A good tip here is to NOT charge SW’s burst above 800% for mobile and 900% for PC (It is possible to reach higher percentage, but these 2 figures should ensure that Snow White fires before Liter’s buff expire without having to sweat as much) as Liter’s buff may expire, resulting in much lower damage. Refer to the steps above for an idea of how the fight should be played.

(Do NOT use only 1 of them)

The core units for this team are Alice and Admi. Admi provides reload speed for Alice, and Alice provides huge DPS in short time. Your goal is to use Alice’s burst as your burst in fight and break Modernia’s core ASAP. You would want to manually control Alice and quick tap to build up burst gauge faster, which allows you to activate burst earlier. Refer to the steps above for an idea of how the fight should be played.

3rd rotation and beyond

This section of the guide assumes that it’s at least your third time fighting Modernia in SI, and therefore has stronger gears (couple of T9 especially attackers T9). You should have more than enough DPS to break Modernia’s core before she fires a second laser, and wants survivability to reduce reliance on good RNG to clear consistently and save time. Therefore, a healer should be included in your team.

To have an easier time, you should clear 3 bombs on one side and attempt to i-frame the remaining 3 bombs. Even if you fail to i-frame, all units should be able to survive, otherwise retry. As soon as your burst is ready again, activate burst and break her core.
  3. Modernia will now begin to act a cycle of: Firing 6 bombs>Moving forward>Fires machine gun>Moving backwards. You should time AOE burst to clear bombs, and follow step 2 to deal with bombs when AOE burst is on cooldown. When you are not dealing with bombs, control your highest DPS unit and damage Modernia’s body. (Avoid breaking both wings, otherwise she enters into teleport mode.)
  4. Repeat step 3 until the fight ends.

Team Composition

The general rule for the team compositions in this section is 1 healer, 1 CDR buffer and 3 DPS units. The DPS units are very flexible, and you should always use your strongest DPS units even if they are not mentioned by the guide. As long as you are able to break Modernia’s core, your team will do fine.

Note: For all teams below that recommends Liter as B1 (except for team Noir+Blanc), Dorothy is the next best alternative for Liter (better than Volume) since Dorothy provides CDR and can deal decent damage on her own compared to Volume. Dorothy has to be paired with Privaty though, to ensure that cooldown rotates fast enough.

The core units for this team composition are Pepper and Dolla. Pepper provides healing, while Dolla is the only B2 with cooldown reduction, which allows you to activate another burst rotation to break Modernia’s core before Modernia fires a second laser.

The remaining 3 units should be the best DPS units you have. Scarlet is the best option with her high single target damage and AOE burst to clear bombs, Modernia provides great DPS and Drake provides good DPS and burst generation being a shotgun unit.

The core units for this team are Liter and Rapunzel. Rapunzel provides healing, while Liter acts as the CDR and ATK buffer. You should always activate Liter’s burst and only use Rapunzel’s burst when one of your units is down.

Dorothy is the best replacement for Liter but has to be paired with Privaty. Volume can replace Liter, but you will need better skills and gears on your DPS units to account for the weaker buffs. Soda can replace Rapunzel, although Soda has lower healing. Only use Liter/Volume’s burst when you have Soda in team.

Guilty, Viper and Rupee are the top options for B2 since they provide good DPS, but any other 20s B2 works too if your DPS units have enough damage to full clear already.

Scarlet’s burst could have been timed better for 2nd burst rotation to clear bombs. It is recommended to clear 3 bombs and i-frame the remaining 3 bombs, perfectly i-framing all 6 bombs as demonstrated here is not easy.

The core and irreplaceable unit for this team is Noise. Noise provides survivability by taunting the machine gun and bombs which have to be i-framed. There are 2 ways of using Noise.

The 1st method is manual control Noise for the whole fight. Therefore, putting high DPS units on 1 side is needed to avoid breaking both wings. Controlling Noise, you should fully charge an attack and release it right as Modernia’s wings snaps back to i-frame the bombs. Refer to the 1st video below.

The 2nd method is to control your highest DPS character and aim at Modernia’s body to lower chances of breaking both wings. When the bombs are about to land on Noise, switch to Noise to i-frame the bombs. Refer to the 2nd video below.

Liter as always the top option for B1, providing CDR buff and huge ATK buff. Volume can replace Liter but requires your other units to have higher skill levels and better gears. Note: Dorothy should not be used here as Noir’s max ammo increase will mess up Dorothy’s CDR buff.

The core units are our bunny twins, Noir and Blanc. Note:

Core units are Blanc and Noir. Note: Blanc has to be paired with Noir. (Do NOT use Blanc without Noir)

Blanc is the main act here, providing damage taken debuff for 10 seconds, which hugely amplifies everyone’s damage. Blanc also provides healing and shielding, which helps the entire team to survive Modernia’s machine gun and bombs.

Noir is here to mainly reduce Blanc’s 60s CD to 20s. Other than that, Noir provides a small ATK buff and good burst gen being a clip shotgun unit with the lowest reload time.

The 2 remaining slots should be 2 other B3 DPS units, with once again Scarlet and Modernia being top options, easy to play and their burst help to deal with bombs. Using other DPS units such as Laplace and Alice if you don’t have the 2 Pilgrims will work fine too.

  1. I just open SII is her laser timing just pure RNG or she wont do it if you reach certain damage threshold after certain time? Modernia just use laser 2 times and I instantly dead

    • If you need more damage to full clear, Scarlet, Modernia, basically any high single target DPS, don’t use Harran because she’s bad in single boss fights.
If you are unable to break core, Alice/Snow White/Maxwell are the best options if you invested decently in them

  2. Hello!
I want to thank author of this guide!
It’s my first stage 8 in Special Interception (In Blacksmith, Chatterbox I reached only stage 7).

My strongest attackers is Modernia, Drake and Rupee (I don’t have Snow White, Scarlett or Alice).
So in battle I went like this: Liter (T8, Bond Lvl 10), XAnne (T8, Blvl 22) Drake (One T9, others T8, Blvl 20) , Modernia (two T9, two T8, Blvl 29), Rupee (t8, blvl 20).
XAnne I took for Atk buff and healing.
So, all Nikkes was alive the whole battle (except Rupee, she died but thank to Anne, she resurrected later).
For first battle I tried to use Modernia’s Burst, but damage was not enough to break a core, so in next time I use Drake’s Burst, and everything worked out, core was broken.

Total damage was 59 m, very little left to 62 m. I hope in next time I reach stage 9.

And finally, I want to thank everyone who worked on all the guides here. It takes enough time to read and understand all the guides here, but you’ve spent even more time researching and writing about all this info. So, thank you very much everyone for the work!

    • Cause Viper Lower Defense up to 20% and increase Allies attack up to 26%/Hit Rate 11% when target appears. She is amazing for Single Boss Fights.

  3. Nice guide. If you’re struggling to keep a wing intact near the end, try playing in vertical mode.

I almost cleared Modernia with T7-T8 gear at +3-4 gear levels but I kept wiping when the AI targeted and destroyed the remaining wing.

I tried it again today, but I switched the settings so that the game played in vertical mode and found that the AI were less likely to target the wing when it was out of frame. This allowed me to keep a wing intact and clear Modernia without transitioning phases.

  4. Finally able to clear her today with a variation of the rapunzel healing team. Before I always ended up destroying the remaining wing at the very last bar so, I decided to take a risk and just focus on her body after destroying the core.
My team was Liter-Rapunzel-Drake-Viper-Laplace. Just letting it here if someone has this same problem.

  5. Used Dorothy, Dolla, Modernia, Laplace, Noise.

Used Noise i-frame, but most of times I try to shoot the bombs out of the sky so I didn’t use Noise i-frame too many times.

  6. Used Centi, Guilty, Noise, Alice, Modernia. All T9 when I first cleared it, and Alice is the most invested one with LB3 and optimal skills. All others are lowly invested except for Modernia, not as good as Alice but it’s decent.

My actual advice is learn to switch character when the bomb comes and heal, also if you’re stuck at T8, just break one of the wings after you get to stage 4 or 5. From my experience, breaking it helps a lot because the characters can’t break the other wing before you finish her and you won’t have to deal with her teleportation bs.

If it still doesn’t work, just wait and collect the T9s and upgrade it till yiu managed to beat her. Good luck!

  7. I just wanted to say, Blanc is PERFECTLY GOOD to go without Noir; you’re only missing on the cd part, not any part of the ability or kit and that can easily be circumvented by using another b2. One less b3/dps doesn’t hurt that much since the increased damage she provides more than makes up for it. Used a team of Liter, Blanc, Alice, Marian and Centi and was able to jump from barely stage 2 to stage 7 for Modernia.

  8. Blanc is PERFECTLY OK to use without Noir. The ability’s stacked, no part gets locked out, the only issue is the cd which is easily circumvented by using another b2; one b3/dps less is basically nothing thanks to the damage taken increase. I barely reached stage 2 and now made it to 7. Team was Liter, Blanc, Alice, Marian and Centi

  9. I’m currently doing this with the team Liter, Blanc, Alice, Modernia, Noir.
Liter for burst cooldowns and dps buff, Blanc for steady heal uptime and damage taken debuff on boss (very powerful stacking with Liter’s ATK buff), Alice to burst down the core, Modernia and Noir for steady dps, Noir buffing the whole party and providing Blanc 20s burst cooldown.
    Strategy:
    1) Skip cutscene after Modernia appears on screen to make AI aim at core. Use Alice to shoot the core as quickly as possible, use quick attacks without charging. This deals the highest dps in a short time. Duck into cover for the first boss laser attack and reload. If your rhytm was fast enough to empty Alice’s first clip before the laser, you should be able to full burst and destroy the core before a second laser attack. The Liter + Blanc + Alice + Noir combo is incredible for damage, and Noir can considerably increase Alice’s clip size for the full burst, allowing her to absolutely dump on the core!
    2) Switch to Modernia. Aim at the body, don’t attack either launcher. That way there’s zero chance that AI will destroy both launchers and the boss enters a teleport phase. When bombs appear and Modernia’s burst is active, aim and quickly destroy all bombs. When her burst is off, aim and destroy the innermost bomb on both sides, letting four bombs hit your team. Then keep shooting the core. Repeat until victory.

With this strategy, the burst cycle should fall into a rhytm where Modernia clears two consecutive waves of bombs, then you get hit by four for minor to moderate damage. It’s ok if you miss a few extra bombs here and there. Blanc’s healing rate isn’t huge, but the uptime is high, which means that the team should stay at high health most of the time. If you do a good job, Noir should stay above 70% HP for her buff through most of the fight.

IMHO the bunny strategy on this page downplays Noir when it says that “Noir is here to mainly reduce Blanc’s 60s CD to 20s”. Noir’s effect on Alice’s burst is huge due to the increased clip size. Also, on my current team Modernia and Noir are at similar power levels, within 100 points of each other, and they deal very similar damage in this fight. On a kill, Modernia deals ~19M damage and Noir deals ~18M. As a shotgun with lightning fast reloads, Noir is great for this fight! Definitely worth mentioning along with the CDR she provides for Blanc!

  10. I LITERALLY, just unlocked special individual interception yesterday
first day was chatterbox, only got through to phase 4
the next day, modernia. Somehow for some reason I managed to clear all phases.
And luckily enough, it was on full burst day.
Is modernia interception just that easy

  11. Yo,

working on this fight modernia interception with the team u recommended and trying to beat it with sub-par undergeared units to get more rewards

i noticed one thing, when i take team cover from the laser my units still get stunned and take damage so what is the point of that, after that u are stunned a long time and will get lasered twice before you can recover

am i missing something about your strategy or do i need to use some infinite health cheat like every other cheap chinese piece of shit game ?

    • you need to destroy the core before 2nd laser, because you can take cover from 1 laser attack fully and not get stunned. After you destroy the core don’t destroy the wings and only attack body because if you break both of the wings, Modernia with restore all her parts and start lasering you again. I managed to complete 9 stages with T7 and only few T8 gears, so it is extremely easy compared to other SI bosses.

  12. You can get perfect rating with just orange gear with: Liter/Centi/Summer Anis/Scarley/Privaty combo. Basically at the start of the fight, swap to Centi and spam shoot to build up meter and activate all of the abilities before changing over to Scarlet and spamming the core. The core should be easily destroyed. Stay on Scarlet and destroy one of the wings. After that, leave the other wing alive and keep her in the initial phase and you can easily secure max rank

  13. I’m at the point, I just bring \Liter/Centi(arguably a poor choice)\Moderna/Scarlet\Rapunzel, and they just are so damn strong at this point (all T10 gear with 70% ideal rolls) and most important skills 5-8 (moderna is 10/10/10) I can core break almost faster than she can switch to start charging (few more good T10 rolls and I think I can get a run where she never fires the 1st lazer attack), and then just body her outright and win. I straight up just shoot 2-3 of the missles and let rapunzel heal back the damage taken and have no problem.

  14. Thanks for the guide!
I don’t have Liter and Snow White, but I used Dorothy / Blanc / Privaty / Noir / Modernia. I’ve only started SP bosses 3 days ago, and it’s the first boss I was able to clear.
And I got a custom module.
