Moran: Best Builds, Teams, and How to Play

Damage sponge incarnate

Basic Information

  • Skill 1: Bring It On!
  • Skill 2: Leave It To Me!
  • Burst: Fair and Square!
  • Cooldown: 40s
  • Rarity: SSR
  • Burst: I
  • Weapon: AR
  • Class: Defender
  • Element: Electric
  • Manufacturer: Tetra
  • Squad: Underworld Queen
  • Weapon Name: AR – Dragon Head

Skill 1: Bring it On!

Activates at the start of the battle. Affects self.
DEF ▲ 3.51% with every 1% of HP loss. This effect is active continuously
Activates when landing 5 normal attack(s) when changing the weapon in use.
Affects the target.
Deals 47.18% of final ATK as additional damage

This skill can increase Moran’s Defense by a whooping ~350%. Although DEF isn’t nearly as effective compared to a damage reduction buff, her defense buff values are high enough to reduce damage by a good amount (around 15%+++ Damage reduction Solo raid, Interception EX level Sync’d Content, hugely depends on content being tackled, Monster stats can be found here.).

To briefly explain where DEF lies in the formula, simply : ATK – DEF. Then apply all damage modifiers and skill damage %’s.

Normal Atk Modifier
Skill ATK modifier

The effectiveness of this skill varies for the worse in PvE content due to CP stat penalties. Although this shouldn’t be an issue in level sync’d content (Interception EX, Solo Raid, etc) and/or content that doesn’t inflict CP penalties (Sim Room overclock, Sim room).

Note: Defense Overload gear rolls does not improve the scaling of this skill, and will act as just an addition to Moran’s def buff (Ex. 11% Def Roll + 350% Def buff = 361%)

Nikkes get exponentially higher Def at Higher Synchro Levels. For example. A level 200 Defender Nikke (No gear) Will have almost 4k Def. A level 400 Defender Nikke will have 16,000.

Rapture’s increase in ATK between these levels are a bit more Linear and does not increase as drastically. therefore Moran simply gets much more tanky at higher level synchro via massive def increase values. Hence the Varied damage reduction between PvE content.

Examples

Solo Raid Challenge Mode (Level 400 Sync). All these damage ticks should have the same value (720k), but gets reduced after every damage tick due to increased DEF at lower HP. (19%~ DMG reduction at rather low HP)
All this was tested with a mere level 1 skill 1 Moran with Tier 9 gear. Expect much higher damage reduction at higher skill levels and investments.
Moran Tanking same shots (720k) At lower HP. Resulting form 720k to 503k, around 30% damage reduction. At skill level 1
Moran Tested at Interception EX (Level 200 Sync). Shots starting at 107k to 91.3k at very low HP. With damage reduction peaking at 15%. At skill level 1.

Skill 2: Leave It To Me!

Activates when firing the final bullet.
Affects 3 enemy unit(s) with the highest ATK.
Taunt for 4 sec.
Activates when HP falls below 20%. Affects self.
Effect changes according to the number of activation time(s).
Perseverance :Effect of each phase does not stack.
Once: Max HP ▲ 91% for 3 sec. Activates once per battle
Twice: Max HP ▲ 69.84% for 3 sec. Activates once per battle
Three Times: Max HP ▲ 51.09% for 3 sec. Activates once per battle.

Her taunt is proc’d on last hit, taunt uptime outside her burst is around 60% if any ammo altering buffs/debuffs aren’t present. Her taunt can be controlled rather comfortably by simply switching to her character and forcing her to reload to prevent the final bullet effect.

Moran gets a massive max HP buff every time her HP falls down below 20%. Max HP buffs increases total HP and HEAL for the same amount of max total HP gained. To visualize, if her HP drops to 20,000/100,000, then her max HP buff of 91% procs, the resulting HP will then be 111,000/191,000. Since her HP buff is only 3s long, her HP will drop to 100,000/100,000 shortly after.

All of her Max HP buffs can be “stacked” if Moran is damaged quickly enough, notable on Alteisein and in PvP. Usually Max HP does not heal if the duration is refreshed before the buff expires (Very notable on Noise, and to an extent, Frima). However, since these are 3 different instances of 3 max HP buffs, she’s able to heal immediately between stacks until she runs out of procs.

Note: Her skill does not grant immunity to death, if there is any Single target nuke that brings her HP from >20% to 0% in one damage tick, she will be knocked out before her passive gets a chance to activate.

Burst: Fair and Square!

Affects self.
Change the Weapon in use:
Damage: 14.7% of final ATK
Lasts for: 10 sec
Additional Effect(s):
Recovers 36.14% of attack damage as HP for 10 sec.
Attract: Taunt all enemies for 10 sec.
Note: Cannot take cover while casting Burst skill.
Affects all allies.
Damage Taken: 35.14% for 10 sec.
DEF ▲ 14.85% of caster’s DEF for 10 sec

A interesting burst. Her weapon switches from AR into SMG, drastically increasing her firing speed from 12/s to 20/s. Increasing her auto attack damage by 1.66x. This burst also synergizes with her skill 1, activating a damaging effect every 5 shots.

The damage for the whole burst would be: 20 (RoF) x 14.7 (ATK Modif) x 10(seconds) = 2,940% + skill 1 ((47.18% skill proc | 5 bullets needed) x 4 (proc per second) x 10(seconds) = almost 4830~% damage for the whole burst, which is pretty OK damage when factoring her being a defender class.

Her lifesteal isn’t enough to fully sustain her as she suffers the fate of being a defender, dealing low damage, even with the pretty high burst multiplier. but it’s rather welcome to add to her tanky nature. Don’t expect much healing from this skill.

Note: she can’t cover doing this skill, however this shouldn’t be an issue for the most part as she would most likely tank everything that goes her way, unless a instant killing move is targeting her. This also does prevent her from i-framing ATKs, in which is better than any sort of damage reduction due to having the ability to completely avoid damage.

Campaign

Despite the plausible high damage reduction from her skill 1, this is rendered useless when using her at high CP deficits, as all stats are massively nerfed across the board the higher the deficit is. Making her defense values significantly less compared to the ATK of the opposing raptures.

Tanks that taunt have no place in campaign clearing anyways as having more DPS is the best defense in those mode. She still has uses against boss battles such as Storm bringer, Harvester, Nihilister, and etc. Bosses that don’t have the ability to one shot.

Underground Team (Boss Battles)

Moran,Sakura,Mast,Anis: Sparkling summer,Privaty

Since Moran is electric, and Anis: Sparkling summer increases by caster’s ATK, this would make Moran able to deal decent damage. Privaty can be replaced with Guillotine/Scarlet. Moran is usually the better “tanker” for them as Moran doesn’t have heals that may gimp Scarlet’s or Guillotine’s DPS potential. Although a single AoE ATK can wipe either of them if not careful enough. Sakura can be replaced by your choice CDR Nikke (Liter, Volume, Dorothy)

Snow White Team (Boss Battles)

Moran,Sakura,Novel,Snow white,Yulha

If the meta duo teams are not available to use (Tia/Naga, Blanc/Noir) and Noise, Moran should be able to suffice. This is somewhat less friendly version of Noise’s variant as there is no healing or 100% uptime on taunt. Sakura’s skill 2 needs to be at high levels (8+) to enable smooth full burst rotations. Sakura is only listed as a (Off-meta) option, use Liter, Volume, or Dorothy if you have the option to. Yulha can be replaced with maxwell

Moran Generalist Team (Boss Battles)

Not really any specific team comp that will be listed, but just follow the rule of Moran, 1 Burst I CDR, 1 Burst II, and 2 Burst III team comp. Moran would most likely not need a back up healer in any team. Use your strongest DPS’s and the team should work.

Nikkes that benefit the most from taunters in the team would be Scarlet, Guillotine, Soline, and Snow white teams.

PvP

Probably her strongest point. Her Tanky nature would make her fit in PvP teams as a damage sponge. She is tankier than Noise, although not exactly a replacement for noise due to a decrease in burst gen and slightly less one shot protection for the team (Ex. Scarlet, Harran teams). Moran would definitely do a better job when tanking single target Nukers, and as she’s a defender, Moran can take advantage of Biscuits invulnerability buff while Noise can’t.

Moran,Biscuit,Anis: Sparkling Summer,Maiden,Centi

Summer Anis buffing most Nikkes here. Moran should be able to tank most attacks heading her way, the only problem is AoE screenwipes can still hurt the team. Moran does have some AoE protection in her kit for the team (Damage reduction), which can prevent team wipes. Maiden can be replaced with other Clip shotgun Nikkes.

Moran,Noah,Biscuit,Anis: Sparkling summer,Centi

Counters other Anis Sparkling summer teams. Anis Sparkling summer can be replaced with Scarlet black shadow or Red hood. Scarlet black shadow and red hood variants of this team will most likely fall to Biscuit – Defender/Taunt walls.

Special Interception | Union Raid | Solo Raid

Moran is a side grade of Noise. While Noise can pretty much tank everything under manual play (Very consistent healing), Moran is a bit more friendly for people who just wants to leave a character unattended. Moran can also handle massively damaging Nukes without being brought down instantly where any other Nikke would be dropped. Example, Alteisein turret barrages at very low skill investments

All Level 1 Skills + T9 level 0 equipment defender gear. 0 LB

Special Interception

Moran should be able to tank most of the interception bosses, however her ability to not cover during her burst can be rather problematic. Her sustain is not that great after all HP “stacks” have been depleted, so some skill investments may be required to tank through the whole round on some interception bosses, namely against blacksmith.

Solo Raid

Her teams would be basically be the same teams from the campaign section. She should most likely be able to tank everything that is thrown at her that isn’t a instant kill move. high skill investments would basically make her an actual wall in this game mode. a few issues with her is that she does not protect the team very well against AoE orientated bosses, and will mostly likely need to utilize cover occasionally. The other issue is that she still has “limited” pool of health , although she does have life steal, it isn’t strong enough to fully sustain her, decent skill investments might be required to use her solo.

Strengths

  • Extremely Tanky Nikke with a taunt kit, becomes even tankier at high level fixed sync’d content (Solo raid)
  • Pairs well with HP Drain Nikkes, or Nikkes that need Full HP to activate buffs
  • Great in PvP as a tanker, while providing decent AoE screen wipe protection via damage reduction buffs

Weaknesses

  • Limited Sustain after all her HP pools are out
  • Unable to cover during burst skill, which can be fatal in some scenarios

Recommended Harmony Cube

Vigor = Better Tanking Abilities
Resilience = Better Taunt Uptime

Do NOT use ammo increasing cubes / Bastion, unless you want her to taunt less (?)

Should You Wishlist?

The Tetra pull is rather jacked with Great Nikkes, and Moran doesn’t quite reach their level. She can be wish-listed once the more notable Nikkes have been acquired (Alice, Bunny twins, Dolla, Biscuit). I’d Consider wish listing Noise first due to better manual play expression, however they’ll both do their roles well if one is preferred over the other.

Note: She is not available to wish-list as of now.

Moran—–Skill 1: 5
Skill 2: 5
Burst : 4
S2 = S1 Skill 1 can offer tremendous damage reduction depending on game mode, or not much at all. Level 5 should normally be enough for Interception and Solo raid purposes. Very slight DPS improvement.

Skill 2 simply increases her “health pool” and punishment she can take.

Burst Simply increases her damage reduction and slightly increases her sustain, however sufficient investments in her skill 1 and 2 should be enough for her to get through most bosses without needing to invest much in her burst.
