Scarlet: Black Shadow Analysis and Theorycraft – Should You Pull?

Sword swing lady but with upgraded assets

Scarlet Black Booty

Note: This was made before the release of Scarlet Black Shadow. A more detailed analysis and guide will be published once testing has been done after her release. Thoughts are also slightly rushed due to festive events~

Basic Information

  • Skill 1: Fleetly Fading: Breakthrough
  • Skill 2: Fleetly Fading: Asura
  • Burst: Fleetly Fading: Strike
  • Cooldown: 40s
  • Rarity: SSR
  • Burst: III
  • Weapon: RL
  • Class: Attacker
  • Element: Wind
  • Manufacturer: Pilgrim
  • Squad: Goddess
  • Weapon Name: RL: Fleetly Fading

Note: Assume all skills are level 10.

Skill 1: Fleetly Fading: Breakthrough

Activates when attacking with Full Charge.
Effect changes according to the number of attack time(s).
Effect of each phase does not stack.
Three times: Affects 1 enemy unit(s)with the lowest DEF.
Deals 250.47% of final ATK as additional damage.
Six times: Affects enemies within attack range.
Deals 500% of final ATK as distributed damage
Nine times: Affects all enemies.
Deals 750.47% of final ATK distributed damage.

The meat of her damage. Well pretty much all her damage. The Number of attack times required to proc each skill may seem long, however her charge time is 0.3 seconds instead of the normal 1 second. This allows Scarlet Black shadow to cycle through her skills fast.

2 Effects CAN’T be proc’d in the same attack. This means that it’ll cycle through effect 1, then 2, then 3 and loops. Instead of effect 1 cycling every 3 attacks in tandem with other effects.

Note: Effect one and two are distributed damage. This means that if there are multiple enemies, the damage of the effect will be divided as such. Ex: 500% / 3 if there are 3 enemies hit by the skill.

In paper, Scarlet black shadow should be able to throw shoot 3.3 attacks per second, however. Due to frame delays from normal attacks, her attack speed is slower. Judging from the banner preview footage, she takes half a second to recover from launching her attack. Although not confirmed if it is user error, judging from the banner footage. Her attack speed is around 0.7s per shot on auto. This may be incorrect at launch, but every Rocket Launcher having delay is true at least.

Alice has a very unique buff. She increases by casters charge speed. It is unknown if this is a intended mechanic but. Since Alice’s charge time is 1.5s, and Scarlet’s charge time is 0.3s.

Alice’s Charge speed buff is actually around a whooping 58%~ charge speed buff on Scarlet.

Alice

Skill 2: Fleetly Fading: Asura

Activates when entering Full Burst. Affects self.
Max Ammunition Capacity ▲ 60% for I0 sec.
Reload 100% of the magazine(s).

Simple skill. Increases her uptime during full burst. Her base ammo is 9 compared to the normal 6 found in most rocket launcher Nikke’s. This does not multiply max overload rolls if any are present. (ex. 100% (base) + 120% from gear + 60% from skill. not 1.0 (base) x 2.2 (gear) x 1.6 skill). However the skill will refill all ammo regardless of how much ammo Scarlet black shadow has after all relevant max ammo buffs have been applied.

Fleetly Fading: Strike

Affects self.
Changes Full Charge attack count required for
Skill 1 to 1 time/2 times/3 times for 10 sec.
ATK ▲ 115.12% for 10 sec.
Charge Damage ▲ 150.12% for 10 sec.

Probably the best skill in the game in regards to increasing self damage. Greatly increases her self DPS by reducing the amount of Attacks needed to activate each proc while massively increasing her charge damage and ATK ▲ . Same rules should apply still in where 2 effects can’t be proc’d at the same time

Scarlet Black shadow should have the highest Single target damage if the target in question does not consistently spawn mobs or have parts that can be pierced. She is below Alice and Red hood if there is a part to pierce, but not by much. Gap gets larger the more parts there is to pierce. To put this in simpler words, she has amazing single target damage.

Campaign

Scarlet Black Shadow should be rather good in campaign. Especially for newbies. However it seems like her splash radius is 1/2 of a normal Rocket launcher AND her burst gen values are slightly lower. This shouldn’t be a problem in auto play however, Scarlet Black shadow won’t be a efficient burst generator under manual play compared to normal rocket launchers.

In regards to screen clearing, her burst should work similarly to how Modernia’s role. Consistent screen wipes, but damage gets slightly diluted the more enemies there are. This will affect her campaign usage in late game chapters (Chapter 20~+) Due to how many raptures spawn on the screen at the same time.

Arena

In theory, she should be great in PvP due to her fast charge speed, however, as mentioned prior. Her splash radius is halved. Which means that she might be only able to hit one Nikke per shot, drastically reducing her burst generation capabilities.

She should still be a great hypercarry DPS due to how much raw damage she can output that can counter “Wall-like” teams such as Noah and healing-stall teams. However she might be easily countered by Sakura and Biscuit. Sakura’s burst heavily reduces wind damage, and Scarlet: Black Shadow deals wind damage. This isn’t an issue in ATK teams, but when putting her in defense teams, players can easily counter using this knowledge.

Biscuit Counter is a bit of a game code issue(?). Due to how distributed damage works. If the Targeted Nikke is Immune, and then damage is distributed, all damage dealt will be 0.

Testing is needed.

Special Interception | Union Raid | Solo Raid

Scarlet: Black Shadow deals massive single target damage, while being easy to use in most teams due to her self buffs. Since she has massive self attack buffs, similar to normal Scarlet, she still prefers to be in teams that have Attack damage ▲ (Tia, Helm. Not ATK ▲) or damage taken debuffs (Novel, Blanc). Crit based teams can also work on her (Volume, Mast) without gimping her damage too much when compared to using Liter instead.

Scarlet: Black shadow would excel in all Special interceptions except for Grave digger. Since effects / Procs don’t directly damage circles, Scarlet: Black shadow will have trouble breaking them if under geared.

Team Comps

Besides just listing the more obvious teams such as : Liter,Tia,Scarlet: Black shadow,Alice,Naga or Liter,Blanc,Scarlet: Black Shadow,Noir,Alice. There is an interesting team that might work if they’re not available. (Alice explained as important buffer in skill 1 section)

Liter,Dolla,Scarlet:Black Shadow,Isabel, Novel/flex. Since Scarlet:Black Shadow wants to burst as much as possible for her to deal massive damage, Isabel’s burst timer reduction on her burst would help. This would allow Scarlet spam her burst more often. Liter can be replaced with Sakura accompanied with another b1 if the user does not want to use 2 meta Cool down reduction Nikkes in one team. This allows liter to be distributed to other teams in solo raid.

Closing Thoughts

Scarlet: Black Shadow is a very strong single target damage dealer, only outclassed by pierce DPS’s if there are multiple parts. She can fit into many teams as she isn’t as self destructive as her alcoholic self, and provides massive self buffs.

Her campaign and Arena viability definitely needs testing, but her bossing capabilities are rather amazing. Pulling a copy of her would be recommended. Although, this may all change depending on her confirmed delays on her auto attacks under auto play.

will update as soon as possible.

Update: Yeah, she’s very good for bossing, pull her

  1. I really hate how they handled the hand-cancer that is charge shot maximizing dps. Adding that charge delay recovery after RL made A2 feel AWFUL to play, and I’m really hoping it doesn’t do the same to Black Scarlet. While I can’t claim to be a manual-snob, I really don’t want to rely on auto ALL the time, that feels even worse.

  2. > “She should still be a great hypercarry DPS due to how much raw damage she can output that can counter “Wall-like” teams such as biscuit and Noah.”
Am i missing something there? I don’t see how she can be good against the Noah/Biscuit combo when her damages come for an important part from distributed ones, along with a potentially lower splash radius as you said. It’s the same reason as to why 2B can’t be used against such team, the damages are neglected in such case because it’s the initial target that defines the distributed damages or something like that from what i understood (which is a terrible aspect of how this is coded but we don’t have choice i guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯).

  3. sucks that they gave her that stupid attack delay, makes using these characters feel like throwing a big ass rock. would a good take away from her current review be that she’s the bosskiller version of A2 without the healthdrain?

    • She doesn’t need parts to do damage, and her splash radius is stupidly small, so not quite.
I’d honestly say she’s an Attacker/Fully Offensive version of Dorothy lol

  4. So, overall, who would you say (given this current juncture) is better between Black Shadow Scarlet and regular Scarlet?

  5. I have pulled both Scarlet and Modernia.

Gonna MLB one of them and will wait for your proper review of Scarlet:BS before that. Approximately how long do you think it will take? 🙂 (take your time).

Also, thank you for the amazing guides.

    • Indeed, Valkkin does amazing work, but my strong suspicion is that you’ll prefer to focus on Scarlet:BS after the review is posted. She’s scary strong.

      • Sorry, can’t reply to comments so nested. I’m glad Soline also found a home in your team. She’s a hidden gem and I can’t believe she is where she is on tier lists, especially given the prevalence of Tia/Naga and that “unforunate” taunt.

  6. She is great for bosses she helped me get Modernia in special Interception down to last two bars, which I never have done before. Does help Modernia is weak to wind. My Scarlet:BS is only on her second limit break (I got 3 copies of her) and her Skills are (1) lv 7, (2) lv 6, and (3) lv 6 with lv 14 affection and unmaxed t9 gear. She isn’t at full power.

  7. Also Scarlet:BS’s weapon is a rocket launcher, so she would not have any distance penalty for her weapon type. That makes her great for all bosses.

    • There was never a penalty for any weapon type for not being in range (except for accuracy). In fact, not having a weapon effective range is slightly disadvantageous as they don’t get the bonus damage from being in effective range.

      • Not really “stack” But Alice’s skill 1 would make Scarlet Attack substantially faster, Which in turn, Proc’s Scarlet:BS skills faster, which results in more DPS.

  8. oh, lol. I forgot about the bonus damage. I just remembered the accuracy part. Well, I need a RL cause all my snipers are too weak and drop my BP, which makes campaign stages harder. At least RL can fill in when you are missing a Nikke in one of the three ranges. Thank you for your response.

  9. I wanna get her but I also want Modernia. I can clear almost all SI bosses except Train and sometimes Gravedigger. My RH can pretty much clear the other bosses. Should I still get Scarlet:BS or Modernia?

    • I had 100 pulls and luckily got her, needed 30 gold tickets to get to 200, so my plan was get at least 1 copy and then buy modernia with mileage ticket you could probably do the same, if you have gold tickets try to pull for Scarlet BS then buy your modernia, hope you get lucky with those pulls

    • Personally, I would focus like a laser on Scarlet: Black Shadow. She’s an absolute monster, and I have cores and overload for both Modernia and Red Hood as well.

She’s simple to use, unlike Red Hood’s Burst V, which can get a little strange. She offers incredible single target and distributed damage. My incredibly buffed Soline (10/10/9, great OL rolls) can’t even keep up with her even on Earth-weak content, and my Scarlet: Black Shadow is not yet fully built.

I’ve been pairing her with Alice (10/5/10, poor OL rolls) due to the apparently broken interaction with Alice’s Skill 1. It’s tough to bench Soline, but she’ll find a spot on a team again. Once she grows up, I guess.

      • Oh hello fellow Soline enthusiast! Funny how we had her as the benchmark for testing haha (although mine is only decently invested – still my best unit though). Even without any investment, Black Scarlet was doing half the damage Soline was. With skill investments (still no OL), she’s already outpacing Soline. She’s scary strong.

  10. Honestly, my biggest overall comment about Scarlet: Black Shadow is whether Shift Up is going to slow down release of such ridiculously strong Nikkes? Is this just the holidays, or are they going to get hooked on the cash they could make from requiring upgrading the next FOTM and bumping the last team 5 off the roster?

I think she should be nerfed somehow TBH to avoid busting the meta so fast again after Red Hood – she’s so easy to use and so powerful – but we’ll see if Shift Up shifts up. Was this just because of the holidays and the anniversary, or should we expect to rotate in expensive new Nikkes more often?

  11. Any team suggestion on sp arena pvp on this character without using noise, jackal, centi, noah, scarlet, tia, and naga, consider I had the rest of nikke?

    • Not sure where you wanna go without any of the mandatory nikkes for PvP. First like mentioned Sakura exists so for defense that might be okay for a while until everyone has an invested Sakura, if not already the case depending on SP Arena instance tier. And for attack, Noah is +/- mandatory against a nuking team to win if you’re not nuking faster. Here we’re definitely not nuking with SBS. I could see her as a SAnis replacement if you don’t have her, inferior but usable. But you’ve to adapt the attacks teams with what each opponent has in defense so it’s hard to recommend attack teams imo, especially if you want them without the classic PvP nikkes.

I can’t wait for a real debuffer to come, to shift the PvP meta a bit. Though as they said, PvP isn’t their primary focus, so not sure what will happen really there. Still, for a not so focused PvP game, the amount of gems you get there is “crazy” compared to the (little) amount in PvE. Until your instance is insane, you can easily get at least 4 000 gems / month (that’s top 30 x 2 in SP Arena).

  12. I already have a one star/dupe Modernia, and was lucky to get a Scarlet:BS on my first 10 pull. I currently have 4538 gems (free) after using the New Year Step Up to get Tia, 42 Advanced Recruit Vouchers, as well as 550 Gold Mileage Tickets.
Would it be worth it to try to pull or use my Gold Mileage Tickets to MLB Modernia or get a Scarlet:BS dupe? Or just stick with what I have and save for future banners?
    I am free to play.

    • As F2P, MLB isn’t worth it past the 160 wall where you’ve no choice but to get 5 MLB. I feel like if you don’t want to regret it, the release schedule is too crazy to pull Nikkes past the initial copy.

  13. So I just started the game f2p and I have liter, tia, naga, black shadow, and modernia. Is this a good comp or should I look out for another character to swap in? I don’t plan on spending any money.

    • Pretty solid team for someone starting the game. It should shred through bosses and can push campaign nicely. Schoolgirls are really great to maximize damage, specially for Modernia since she can hit cores, but they need some manual play. If you can, try to grab the SSR Selector and wait until you have either one of the Bunnies to get the other. They’re still pretty solid and auto play friendly

    • The real downside of that comp is Modernia, but it’s a great start. In ideal circumstances, Modernia does not burst because it lasts so long and the buffs characters cast don’t get extended.

But there’s no room for flex on a Tia/Naga team. You can only have two B3s. I’d aim to replace Modernia with Alice or Red Hood.

      Welcome to a fun game!

      • Red Hood is limited and won’t come back till next year (I think), the best choice would be Alice since she synergizes with Red Hood, though she would need a LOT of investment

      • Since I can’t reply directly to NordVPN, you can pull Red Hood normally. On another account I was able to pull her. She’s the redhead sniper that goes semi auto during her burst right? Only good character I was able to get on that account tho so it’s poo poo.

  14. Have pulled Modernia and Scarlet BS, but am now wondering if it’s crucial to get at least one LB for either (or both). From a campaign/general use perspective, it seems like Modernia would be the one to prioritise for a duplicate (or more…?). Or would it be better to spend the gems on the eventual guaranteed pull banner (e.g., for Liter)?

    • Liter tends to be the #1 pick out of any nikke in game as she can repair cover and give hella buffs. Her burst is also only 20s which lets you have better access to more team comps
