Diesel: Winter Sweets Analysis – Should You Pull?

I guess Raptures have eardrums…

Overview

  • One of the strongest standard-manufacturer units in the game
  • Incredible self-buffing gives her a lot of buffer independence, but also means she doesn’t scale well with most meta buffers.
    • More Sustained and Attack Damage buffs have minimal impact for her.
    • She prefers buffers that give her ATK, caster ATK, and critical rate/damage.
  • Above average wave clear for a Sustained Damage dealer, thanks to burst.
    • However, as it is based on debuffs, it only affects one wave of enemies at a time.
  • Big damage taken debuff on burst for such a high DPS unit synergizes well with off-burst B3 and high DPS B2 units.

Should You Pull?

Yes! You won’t get a chance to pull for Diesel: Winter Sweets (xDiesel, DWS) for a whole year if you miss out on this banner, so you don’t want to miss this one out. xDiesel is one of the most powerful B3 DPS units, with power rivaling that of Pilgrim/Over-Spec Nikkes. Not only is she one of the strongest DPS units to use against bosses, but unlike most Sustained Damage units, xDiesel has great usability in normal maps with her burst.

While she doesn’t get as much of a DPS up from a lot of the meta buffers compared to other units, due to how much self-buff xDiesel gives herself, this also means she has a lot of buffer independence, making her one of the strongest units a player with a low roster can have. Her huge DPS potential gives her potential in element neutral situations as well.

While she is a Limited Unit, 2% rate-up means you should try to primarily obtain her with pulls before you resort to Gold Mileage, which is generally best saved for 1% units, who have a halved rate-up chance by comparison. However, Diesel is good enough to warrant using Gold Mileage to obtain. She is about as strong, and in some cases, stronger than those 1% units.

Another question most likely in people’s minds; Diesel, Brid or save for New Year’s? It’s a hard choice, they both have a lot of pros. While normally, I would say go for what you need most, xDiesel just has so much DPS potential for a standard manufacturer unit. Brid, meanwhile, provides the highest (caster) ATK buff to the entire team on a 20s CD since Tove. Unlike Tove, this ATK buff isn’t limited to one weapon class only, and on top of that, Brid has incredible damage output for a B2. ATK buffs will go up in value the more low ATK buffing DPS units exists, like Liberalio and now Diesel.

Personally, I would try to obtain both Diesel and Brid with pulls if possible, ideally build up the mileage to either save for later, or obtain the one you missed out on. The New Year will give out over a hundred pulls, which can’t be used on the winter banners, as it’ll be too late. These pulls can then be subsequently used to hopefully get the New Year units, and if not, build up the mileage to get them. At least they will be put on the Wishlist and molds later…

Good luck, commanders.

Newbie/Incomplete Box Section

Diesel: Winter Sweets is a B3 Fire RL Attacker that primarily deals a lot of sustained damage. xDiesel has weaponized her awful unique singing voice against the Raptures into an effective way of dealing DPS. Seriously, how is the DPS on this against bosses so strong? When xDiesel has everything stacked up, all her Sustained Damage against a boss is just ridiculous, it can rival the DPS of Pilgrim and Over-Spec, no exaggeration.

While xDiesel will definitely be at her strongest against bosses, as that’s what her biggest sustained damage DPS is dedicated to affecting specifically, against normal maps, xDiesel will still have a lot of viability with her Burst, giving all enemies on the screen at the moment of activation a Sustained Damage effect and a Damage Taken debuff. Both of these will combine to destroy a wave of enemies fast.

However, there’s two major things to note about this amazing DPS; since a lot of it originates from xDiesel massively buffing her Sustained Damage, it means buffers that give additional Sustained or Attack Damage do not affect xDiesel as much as one would hope. Try to make sure xDiesel allies with buffers that primarily give her other buff types, such as ATK, caster ATK, or critical rate/damage.

Second, the biggest downfall of Sustained Damage is that it is Sustained Damage. Sustained Damage works by giving an enemy debuffs that will deal damage to them as long as they have the debuff. This means that if an enemy is debuff immune, they will not be affected by Sustained Damage. For xDiesel, this particularly hurts against Indivilia Anomaly Intercept, as she occassionally makes herself debuff immune.

Outside of such occassions, Diesel will have good DPS to wave clear normal maps, and destructive DPS against boss units.

Activates when entering Full Burst for the first time without using own Burst Skill. Affects self.
Highlight: Critical damage ▲ 20.28% continuously. This effect cannot be dispelled. Effects persist after revival.

Sustained damage ▲ 60.19% for 10 sec.
Activates when entering Full Burst. Affects self in Highlight status.
Sustained damage ▲ 235.03% for 10 sec.

When the battle begins, Diesel will not have either of these buffs. The buff she gets is decided within the first Burst Time. If Diesel is the first B3 unit to use her own active to trigger the first ever Full Burst of combat, she will enter Intro Mode. If Diesel isn’t the first B3 unit to use her own active to activate the first Full Burst of combat, she will instead activate Highlight Mode.

Whichever one she obtains first, she will permanently have it for the rest of combat. Either Intro or Highlight will give her the same amount of critical damage, so the difference is primarily in the amount of Sustained Damage it gives. Intro is supposed to be the lower, consequence-free buff S1 gives. The downside Highlight is supposed to have will be discussed in the Burst section.

With a difference of almost +175% Sustained Damage, there’s no viable reason at the moment as to why xDiesel should use Intro mode against bosses. This means against bosses, xDiesel should always burst second. This will give her access to a stronger buff, and while it technically should have downsides for your allies, they aren’t consequential enough against bosses to sacrifice such a difference in the damage modifier.

This doesn’t necessarily mean Intro lacks merit, however. In normal maps, where you’re swarmed with small enemies that have low HP values, it’s not as impactful to maximize the buff against normal enemies when their HP values aren’t exactly hard to overcome. Also, the downside of Highlight may end up mattering when allies are trying to hit smaller, non-boss enemies. xDiesel burst makes for good wave clear whether used first or second.

For this reason, against normal maps when fighting normal Raptures, it’s okay to use either or. Against bosses, however, who can absorb a lot of HP before going down, if at all when it comes to raids, Highlight is the correct choice.

Skill 2: I’m Gonna Sing Now!

Activates when an ally or self destroys an enemy’s part. Affects all allies (except self).
Mute: Gains immunity to Noise Pollution continuously, stacks up to 3 time(s).
Activates when an ally or self destroys an enemy’s part. Affects self.
Sustained damage ▲ 68.04% for 15 sec.
Activates when attacking with Full Charge. Affects self.
Sustained damage ▲ 318.14% for 3 sec, stacks up to 2 time(s).
Activates when entering Full Burst. Affects the stage target.
Deals 63.33% of final ATK as sustained damage every 1 sec for 9 sec.

Whenever an ally or Diesel destroy a boss’ part, allies gain a buff called Mute, which is supposed to protect them from the downside of Diesel from using Highlight. Again, it will be discussed in the Burst section. Simultaneously, Diesel gives herself a big +68.04% Sustained Damage buff for 15 seconds. Against a boss with a lot of parts, especially regenerating ones, this buff can last a long while. A lot of Sustained Damage units would honestly love to give themselves such a buff, but…

This is where it gets ridiculous. Any time Diesel releases a fully charged shot, she gives herself a ginormous +318.14% Sustained Damage for 3 seconds. She can do this up to two times, in order to give herself a downright absurd +636.28% Sustained Damage buff. The amount of self-buffing here was previously unheard of.

Due to the fact that this part of S2 buff is so massive, and is obtained in such an unconditional way, this means that Diesel doesn’t necessarily have to face off against bosses and enemies with parts. Since the bulk of the Sustained Damage buff comes from just releasing full charge shots, that means Diesel should absolutely avoid certain bosses that massively decrease unit Charge Speed. This will make it difficult to stack up the buff, and Diesel will lose out on a ton of damage.

Something to keep in mind is that while the buff from releasing full charge shots is big, it also has a very short duration of 3 seconds. With a base reload time of 2 seconds, and a base charge time of 1 second, non-altered reloads completely get rid of the buff, forcing Diesel to stack up the buff again. Since Sustained Damage DPS checks for the amount of buffs active per tick, it’s important for Diesel to keep firing to maintain the buff.

Reload speed, charge speed, magazine size to decrease the number of reloads, all of it will come through in helping Diesel maintain the buff. However, the most cost effective way to do so is the Resilience Cube. On its own, it is enough to maintain the buff with manual play after a reload at Rank 1 effect, and playing on auto with at least Rank 2 effect.

On top of all of this, when entering Full Burst, Diesel will also give the ‘stage target’ a Sustained Damage debuff. This will always target the boss to kill in normal stages, and the primary boss in boss stages. This means she will always be dealing damage to a boss, whether it’s her turn to Burst or not.

Burst: La La La ♬

Affects all enemies.
Damage taken ▲ 25.09% for 10 sec. Deals 18.43% of final ATK as sustained damage every 1 sec for 9 sec.
Affects the enemy if the enemy is the stage target.
Deals 181.2% of final ATK as sustained damage every 1 sec for 9 sec.
Affects all allies (except self) if self is in Highlight status.
Noise Pollution: Hit rate ▼ 100% for 1 sec.
Affects all allies if self is in Highlight status.
Stack count of Mute ▼ 1.

The moment Diesel uses Burst, she gives all enemies present a Damage Taken debuff. Every enemy that was hit by the Damage Taken debuff is also afflicted by a small Sustained Damage debuff. This is her main source of damage in normal, non-boss stages, as this is the only Sustained Damage that comes through against non-bosses.

If the ‘target’ is present, they are also afflicted with a huge Sustained Damage debuff. Combined with the S2 Sustained Damage Debuff, the one on Burst that afflicts all enemies, all the Sustained Damage buffs she grants herself all over her kit, this skill effectively melts bosses. Even those that aren’t Fire Weak take an incredible amount of damage from this, due to the sheer amount of multiplication coming through.

Finally, the ‘scary’ downside of taking Highlight: If Diesel uses Burst while benefitting from Highlight Mode, all allies are afflicted with a -100% Hit Rate debuff. This would honestly be a very debilitating debuff, were it not for the 1 second duration. Since xDiesel will only get to burst 7 times, being the second unit to use Burst to obtain Highlight buff, this means at most, allies will only have at most, 7 seconds in a boss fight where they may not necessarily be hitting core/parts, so on.

This debuff is not worth worrying about against bosses. Against normal enemies, it’s possible, since the smaller hitbox of standard raptures means that the debuff could make the difference there against Raptures that have one-shot moves against Nikkes; however, where xDiesel shines most, the debuff really doesn’t mean much. That’s why against bosses, she really should be the second unit to use Burst at all times.

Destroying parts provides allies with a Mute buff that negates the Noise Pollution debuff. Against bosses with parts, the low concern debuff is made even less scary. Nonetheless, this is still yet another advantage for xDiesel to have against bosses with Parts, no matter how small.

Concerning the Damage Formula

Without a doubt, one of the biggest things that stand out about xDiesel’s kit is that she gives herself an incredible amount of Sustained Damage, close to +1000%, assuming Highlight mode is taken. While it is a good rule of thumb that a mixture of different damage modifiers is the best way to boost DPS, the truth about Sustained Damage is that it is calculated the same as the modifier ‘Attack Damage’ in the damage calculation.

Since ‘Attack Damage’ is effectively just more ‘Sustained Damage’ for xDiesel, a lot of buffers that provide Attack Damage just don’t give as much to xDiesel as one would think. As this includes a lot of top tier/meta buffers, don’t expect as much of a DPS up from them for xDiesel as one would hope. While she can still work with them, one has to consider other buffers to party up with xDiesel to maximize her personal damage output.

In particular, ATK/caster ATK buffers provide xDiesel with something she lacks in her kit; similar to Mihara: Bonding Chain, xDiesel is one of the few Burst 3 Attacker units to give themselves zero ATK buffs whatsoever. Buffers like Liter, Miranda (Treasure) (MirandaT) and other unconventional choices are amazing support units for xDiesel.

In-depth explanation

To better know how come Diesel: Winter Sweets doesn’t work so well with certain supporters, we need to understand how part of the damage formula works for Diesel’s Sustained Damage, simplified to exclude modifiers that do not affect it.

Base Damage × Major Modifiers × Element Bonus Damage × Damage Up × Damage Taken = Final Damage

Base Damage = ((Character Base Attack × ((1 + Attack Buff Sum) + Caster ATK Buff Sum))) × Final ATK damage of Attack/Skill
Major Modifiers = 1 + (Other Crit Damage Sources + (0.5 Base (50%))) + Full Burst Bonus 0.5 (50%)
Element Bonus Damage = Base 1.1 (10%) + Other Elemental Damage Sources
Damage Up = 1 + Attack Damage + Sustained Damage
Damage Taken = Damage Taken

All of xDiesel’s Sustained Damage skills have very low base damage multipliers. If you add all of the Sustained Damage from her S2 and Burst at max rank, against a boss, it adds up to ~263% final ATK as damage per second for 9 seconds.

This would be very paltry DPS (a standard shotgun’s basic attack DPS alone beats it), but when it is boosted by all possible Sustained Damage modifiers xDiesel gives herself, this goes up all the way to (263% x (235.03% + (318.14% x 2) + 68.04%)) ~ 2470% final ATK damage per second, an almost tenfold increase in damage, assuming no other modifiers, a part was broken and that xDiesel is in Highlight Mode.

Since all of this DPS boost originates from Sustained Damage modifiers alone, trying to add more Attack Damage and Sustained Damage is a minimal increase in DPS, compared to giving her more of any of the other modifiers that can be given to her by allies, as it adds into an already huge multiplier. ATK UP, Caster ATK, Critical Damage/Rate, Elemental Bonus Damage, Damage Taken, all of it will provide xDiesel a bigger damage bonus compared to more Attack Damage and/or Sustained Damage.

Let’s pretend all the Sustained Damage final ATK adds up to 100% per second mid-burst, the Damage Taken debuff from Burst is 25% and that xDiesel’s Sustained Damage self-buffs all add up to 1000%, to make it easier to visualize. Let’s also exclude crits for now, as they are an unreliable DPS up. If we input those values into the damage formula, and assume we are hitting an enemy with 0 defense value:

(100) × 1.1 × 1.5 × 11 × 1.25 = 2268.75

If Ade: Agent Bunny uses Burst, she will give xDiesel +55% Attack Damage at max rank burst. Ignoring the caster ATK Ade gives, as well as the Pierce Damage, as Sustained Damage isn’t affected by this, it will result in:

(100) × 1.1 × 1.5 × 11.55 × 1.25 = 2382.1875

2382.1875/2268.75 = 1.05

Only an effective 5% damage increase. Despite how big the modifier is for the overwhelming amount of units in the game, xDiesel barely got anything out of it in this simplified example. In fact, for xDiesel, she’ll mainly see a boost from the caster ATK bonus in normal gameplay instead.

Conversely, Blanc, nowadays a fairly situational Burst 2 buffer, who has lost her role as a meta B2 unit in Tetra Tower to Ade: Agent Bunny, provides a +40% Damage Taken Modifier at max rank burst. Despite being somewhat off-meta nowadays, for xDiesel, she is a great ally in giving her a DPS up:

(100) × 1.1 × 1.5 × 11 × 1.65 = 2994.75

2994.75/2268.75 = 1.32

A 32% increase in damage! While Blanc’s damage taken debuff is normally not as good for allies compared to stronger buffs, for xDiesel, since most of her buff power originates from Damage Up, it can provide her with a more sizeable DPS up, even though xDiesel herself already has her own Damage Taken debuff with Burst.

While this is a gross oversimplification, I hope it gives users a good idea as to why it’s best to have Diesel partner up with units that give her buffs she severely lacks, over giving her more of what she already has.

Buffers to Consider vs Bosses for Diesel: Winter Sweets

Even though xDiesel does not necessarily dislike buffers that mainly buff Attack Damage, such as Ade: Agent Bunny, Grave or Crown, she simply doesn’t get as much of a DPS up from them if they don’t provide much of anything else, if at all. One may end up disappointed in seeing xDiesel’s DPS barely going up by using the more standard B2 units compared to the following.

While Crown still provides xDiesel with a nice caster ATK buff when xDiesel uses Burst, that’s a very inefficient use for Crown from a primary DPS buffer, if the main DPS unit is only really benefitting from just the caster ATK. Not to mention, that caster ATK buff is only for when the B3 unit uses their Burst. xDiesel prefers more constant sources of ATK buffs, because her S2 still deals a sizeable amount of damage when it’s not her turn to Burst.

That is why I have compiled a list of great to acceptable units to use for buffing/partnering xDiesel. This also means that the more ‘meta’ buffers that don’t work that great for xDiesel will go to provide their buffs to other meta/high tier DPS units that will actually see a greater DPS up by comparison.

NOTE: It is assumed that a cooldown unit is used in the team setup, whether from the Nikke mentioned or not.

Burst 1

Liter

Liter is a very clear, default choice. She gives a ton of ATK and some Critical Damage to xDiesel, two stats she appreciates a lot. Even though it is just for 5 seconds, xDiesel’s Sustained Damage from S2 and Burst lasts 9 seconds.

This means unlike most other Attacker units, who only get a big boost to a little less than half of their DPS within a Burst Time window (5s upon cast – the small amount of time needed to enter FB), xDiesel gets a little bit more out of Liter in DPS gains. Even if xDiesel has a lot of ATK OLs, it still benefits her a lot to get more ATK from Liter, as she lacks any form of self-ATK buffing.

Miranda

Even if xDiesel doesn’t critical hit often, MirandaT provides a sizeable ATK modifier for the full 10 seconds of a Full Burst. If xDiesel happens to have a lot of critical rate OLs, MirandaT will give her so much damage. There is also synergy to be had here with MirandaT’s main beneficiary in Fire Raids, Mihara: Bonding Chain. (MiharaBC)

MiharaBC has incredible off-burst DPS damage, allowing her to make great use of xDiesel’s Damage Taken debuff on enemies. xDiesel’s lack of self ATK buffing, similar to MiharaBC, also makes it a lot easier to ensure MiharaBC is the main beneficiary of MirandaT’s critical rate buff.

NOTE: While xDiesel could in theory perform the critical rate tactic with MirandaT, unlike other Sustained Damage units, she has to keep attacking to maintain the Sustained Damage buff from S2, as Sustained Damage checks for buffs per tick. The most she could benefit from it is 3 seconds per full burst, and so it’s not recommended. This makes xDiesel the only unit that prefers critical rate over critical damage if intended to use with MirandaT.

Volume

Volume is one of the biggest sources of critical rate in the game, still. Since xDiesel loves to crit, Volume is a noteworthy option. Even though she is inferior to Liter by default, as crits are inherently unreliable, there is one exception: If used alongside Maids (Mast: Romantic Maid (mMast) + Anchor: Innocent Maid (mAnchor)), the amount of caster ATK mMast gives is incredible enough to rival the ATK Up Liter provides.

If mMast becomes the primary buffer for xDiesel in such a setup, which is recommended, as very few can make use of more ATK as she can currently (due to her lack of self ATK buffing), it becomes more efficient to increase Critical Rate and Critical Damage potential. In tandem with mMast’s Critical Rate buff from S1 and Critical Damage on Burst, Volume can provide xDiesel with a lot of damage potential, especially if xDiesel has a lot of ATK OLs.

In a similar vein to Liter, even though the buffs from Volume only last 5 seconds upon cast, because xDiesel’s Sustained Damage has a 9 second duration, it’s slightly more efficient on xDiesel compared to other DPS units, who only get just under 50% benefit from a 5s buff mid-Full Burst.

The only downside to this setup is that mMast is incredible for ‘funneling’ DPS into the primary DPS unit in raids. xDiesel may not be ready to be the one benefitting from the funnel strategy for a user, which could ‘waste’ mMast.

Burst 2

Nayuta

Nayuta provides xDiesel with a permanent caster ATK bonus. Since about a quarter of xDiesel’s Sustained Damage activates from S2, meaning it can also activate off-burst, xDiesel benefits a lot from permanent buffs.

However, the biggest thing that this synergy does is give Nayuta, one of the strongest hitting B2 units in the game, a Damage Taken debuff to make good use with her transformed weapon. Nayuta is effectively a B3 unit disguised as a 20s B2 unit in how she works. Every time it’s xDiesel’s turn to Burst, Nayuta benefits so much from such a big Damage Taken modifier, where it is otherwise difficult to fit in a team, as few B1 and B3 units provide it for a full team to make use of.

Eunhwa: Tactical Upgrade

To a lesser extent compared to Nayuta, Eunhwa: Tactical Upgrade (tEunhwa) also deals great damage for a B2 DPS unit. tEunhwa provides a damage taken debuff for xDiesel to make good use of and also benefits from the Damage Taken debuff tEunhwa burst provides.

The main benefit is that since they are both Fire units, they can deal a lot of damage together against a Fire-weak boss. Since no one would be badly needing tEunhwa vs a Fire Weak boss, it’s acceptable to have her and xDiesel work together.

Unconventionally, Emma: Tactical Upgrade (tEmma) benefits xDiesel a lot when combined with TEunhwa, and of course, massively benefits TEunhwa. This will be discussed in the ‘Surprising Synergies’ section.

Brid: Silent Track

Brid: Silent Track (xBrid) is a unit that deals a lot of damage, provides xDiesel a big caster ATK buff and against a Wind (Fire-Weak) enemy specifically, provides two additional sources of Damage Taken debuff. In tandem with xDiesel’s Damage Taken debuff, xBrid’s personal DPS also improves.

xBrid currently has the highest caster ATK buff in the game that can affect any unit and is on a 20s cooldown. Since xDiesel still deals good damage off-burst thanks to S2 Sustained Damage, and loves ATK buffs especially, xBrid is very beneficial to xDiesel.

However, using xBrid for xDiesel means you can’t use her alongside Tove and Drake. Despite her support label, she is effectively the main DPS in the ‘shotgun team’ for a raid team in Fire-weak content currently. If you don’t have Tove ready, though, it is worth considering using xBrid for xDiesel for the time being in Fire-weak content.

Duos

Mast: Romantic Maid,Anchor: Innocent Maid

Even though xDiesel doesn’t have any Distributed Damage, Maids are some of the best buffers for xDiesel. Using the two of them is required. Since one of xDiesel’s favorite stats is ATK, having both mMast and mAnchor together will allow xDiesel to always benefit from a permanently max Drunk stat mMast burst when they Burst together in their Burst cycle.

Unconventionally, since xDiesel needs to burst second against bosses, this is one of the few times where mAnchor has to Burst first in the first Burst cycle to get the Burst chain going. While mAnchor doesn’t have the stronger caster ATK buff to give xDiesel upon using Burst, it’s acceptable to have this damage fall-off when it isn’t xDiesel’s turn to burst. Besides, mAnchor’s caster ATK buff is still really good to have, especially the S2 portion when it combines for most of mMast’s caster ATK buff on use.

As mentioned in the Volume section, thanks to mMast providing a nice source of permanent Critical Rate up alongside Critical Damage with Burst, there is a lot of synergy to be had with Maids + Volume when buffing xDiesel. If Maids (mainly mMast) aren’t needed for another team, if you will use them for xDiesel, it is highly recommended to make use of Volume over Liter.

Blanc,Noir

The Bunny Duo work well for xDiesel. Blanc has one of the highest Damage Taken debuff modifiers in the game, and Noir gives her a permanent caster ATK buff as long as she can maintain her health above 70%, which is easy when Blanc is on the team providing lots of heals. Noir’s max ammunition up and magazine refill upon entering FB also helps in maintaining xDiesel’s S2 stacks. Using Noir over Rouge allows a more fitting B1 support to benefit xDiesel as well, namely, Liter.

Surprising Synergies

Emma: Tactical Upgrade,Eunhwa: Tactical Upgrade

Even though xDiesel doesn’t have any true damage, the two of them still give xDiesel nice stats. tEmma has a sizeable caster ATK buff with burst on a 20s CD for xDiesel to make use of, a permanent Damage Taken debuff for both tEunhwa and xDiesel to make use of, and massively buffs tEunhwa to the point where she can deal very serious damage in Fire Weak content, especially for a B2 unit.

Since no team in most Fire Weak raids necessarily needs the Absolute duo as of this writing, it’s possible xDiesel can give them a place in Fire Weak content.

Tia,Naga

This is a last resort. Tia’s S1 Attack Damage modifier doesn’t do much for xDiesel, but when Naga is boosted by a shield, her burst is boosted to give a good amount of caster ATK. Prior to xBrid, this was one of the biggest sources of caster ATK for all allies on a 20s cooldown. While this is nice, the Nikkes mentioned prior to JKs provide a lot more for xDiesel to make use of.

Something to note is that unfortunately, xDiesel’s Sustained Damage cannot make use of Core Damage up. Only her rockets from basic attacks can.

However, for players that don’t have many options at the moment, considering xDiesel can work acceptably even if a boss lacks a core (since it’s not the stat she is looking for), JKs can be used to buff xDiesel vs bosses until better options are obtained.

Campaign

While xDiesel does have a Burst that can affect all enemies, as it is debuff based, she suffers from the same issue as other units reliant on debuffs to deal damage: it is not applied to new waves of spawning enemies. This makes her a poor choice for base defense/defense maps: Not only do waves of enemies just keep spawning in, there is no boss to melt with her huge Sustained Damage DPS.

However, xDiesel, unlike other Sustained Damage units, still does deal very good damage to all the regular raptures in a map. Even though non-bosses are afflicted by the smallest buff in her arsenal, it is still massively boosted by all the Sustained Damage buffs and the Damage Taken debuff, alongside other ally buffs combine to make quick work of a wave of enemies.

If the boss of a map is present, it’s even better, because it basically kills them without needing to aim. Something to note about xDiesel, however, is that because she lacks self-ATK buffs, she desperately needs ATK OLs and/or ATK buffers to not fall behind when entering a power deficit in campaign.

Unlike boss stages, there is some merit to utilizing Intro mode in campaign maps. Even though Highlight is superior in terms of damage output, against such small targets, it’s plausible that the -100% Hit Rate debuff that occurs when casting burst may result in missing a crucial shot against a Rapture minion capable of one-shotting a Nikke.

While this is unlikely, and honestly a minor point, it is worth considering. Besides, to non-boss enemies, their health bars are small enough where the difference between Intro and Highlight likely won’t matter. Either way, this is about the only scenario where Intro can see use. If using xDiesel in campaign, she is best saved for when the boss appears, though there is also merit in using her to contribute to a wave’s destruction, even if the boss isn’t there.

Arena

Not recommended. She is a standard RL and the bulk of her damage is on Burst. There is no ‘target’ in PvP, meaning opposing Nikkes are only afflicted by the smallest Sustained Damage in xDiesel’s kit.

Since xDiesel is dependent on releasing full charge shots to maintain S2 stacks, this also means that stuns will cause the stacks to fall off, and if she dies, the remainder of the Sustained Damage on enemies is the base, low value. This makes her DPS potential in PvP too inconsistent. If a team has a dispel, this also gets rid of her DPS if it’s cast after xDiesel uses her Burst.

Special Interception | Union Raid | Solo Raid

Where Diesel will destroy her enemies. xDiesel’s kit is tailor-made to work for bossing/raid content. As long as you remember to use buffers that benefit her a lot, as well as other B3 units that benefit from her Damage Taken debuff, if possible, xDiesel is one of the best raiding units at the moment. Her self-buffing is so high, that she isn’t necessarily just stuck to Fire-weak content only. Her DPS potential is ridiculous, approaching or even matching other high tier DPS units.

However, there’s two major bosses that xDiesel doesn’t fare well against, and unfortunately, one of them is a Fire Weak boss. Thermite β already screws over charge weapon Nikkes a lot; even though xDiesel’s DPS isn’t primarily dealt through basic attacks, since she needs to perform them in order to maintain her biggest Sustained Damage buff, the charge speed reduction Thermite β uses constantly is enough to give xDiesel a poor matchup vs it.

The second boss is Indivilia; Even though Indivilia is Fire weak, and is for the most part, vulnerable to xDiesel’s DPS, she has a trick up her sleeve; she will give herself temporary debuff immunity every time her element barrier is broken:

The revolving shield icons on Indivilia are a sign that the ‘Overcharge’ buff is currently active.

While the buff Indivilia gives herself isn’t permanent, and only activates on occassion, the fact that it lasts 15 seconds means that there will be a huge 15 second time window per cast where xDiesel can’t deal proper DPS. If a Sustained Damage debuff is on Indivilia at the time of casting, the Sustained Damage just disappears and stops ticking. While she has the buff active, she cannot gain a standard Sustained Damage debuff. In a 180 second boss fight, 15 seconds is a LOT.

This also affects the Damage Taken debuff on xDiesel’s burst. While xDiesel can still deal high damage to Indivilia, it’s something to keep in mind when fighting her. When you destroy Indivilia’s Element Barrier, she will then buff herself with Overcharge, neutering xDiesel’s DPS for 15 seconds.

Something to note is that she will only cast the buff shortly after the Element Barrier is broken. Since Indivilia will take a while to perform her deadly attack while protected by the barrier, you can delay breaking it and ensuring the important part of xDiesel’s Sustained Damage finishes ticking before breaking the barrier.

  • Huge self-buffing gives her very high default damage, especially in Highlight Mode.
  • Damage Taken debuff on Burst is great for allies that either have great DPS off-burst or are good non-B3 DPS units.
  • Has lots of potential for DPS increases, as long as she is buffed properly.
  • Very auto-friendly, especially with Resilience Cube equipped.
  • Thanks to her high default damage, she is one of the most powerful Nikkes against bosses a new player can have, if their roster is low.
  • Has potential to screenwipe vs normal maps, unlike other Sustained Damage DPS units.
  • Diesel, my beloved.

Weaknesses

  • Due to her incredible self-buffing, she is very inefficient with other buffers that provide more Attack/Sustained Damage.
  • Debuff based damage means it is vulnerable to debuff immunity, and loses value in normal maps where more enemies can keep spawning.
  • Vulnerable to Charge Speed reduction debuffs.
  • You’ll go deaf.

Recommended Cubes

resilience cube

Resilience is required. On its own, it is already enough to ensure Diesel can maintain S2 stacks by reducing the reload time just enough to where with manual play, stacks can be maintained at Level 1 effect Resilience Cube, and with auto play, minimum Level 2 effect Resilience cube is enough. With other sources of reload speed, ammo increases, magazine refills and whatnot from allies, it’ll help make S2 stacks effectively permanent, which is important for Diesel’s DPS, as Sustained Damage checks for buffs per tick.

Doll Priority

As one of the most powerful bossing DPS units in the game currently, even against non-Fire Weak, her Doll Priority is very high. As a unit that desperately needs ATK due to her lack of self-ATK buffing, she will appreciate the ATK boost it gives. She could potentially see use in other raid content. She doesn’t exactly make use of the Charge Damage multiplier it provides, but DPS is DPS.

Expected Skill Priority

Diesel: Winter SweetsSkill 1: 4
Skill 2: 10

S1 << S2Skill 1 provides her with an okay critical damage buff, and an important Sustained Damage buff. However, the Sustained Damage buff here pales in comparison to the one from S2, and so is the lower priority one.

Skill 2 not only provides her with massive amounts of Sustained Damage, it is also the source of an additional Sustained Damage DPS debuff against a boss.

Even though Burst appears to have low scaling, after all the Sustained Damage multipliers from S1 and S2 are taken into account, this is one of the hardest hitting bursts in the entire game currently.

Increase Element Damage Dealt★★★★★4xWanted for Union Raids and Solo Raid content.
Increase Hit Rate☆☆☆☆☆0x
Increase Max Ammunition Capacity★☆☆☆☆0 – 1xDiesel doesn’t necessarily benefit from ammo. It just helps her maintain stacks easier, although the Resilience cube alone already does a good job with that.
Increase ATK★★★★★4xSimply more damage. For a unit that completely lacks any form of self-ATK buffing, ATK OLs are even more important for Diesel than usual.
Increase Charge Damage☆☆☆☆☆0 – 1xEven though she is a RL, she does not deal damage primarily through her basic attacks.
Increase Charge Speed★☆☆☆☆0 – 1xIn a similar vein to ammo, charge speed helps Diesel maintain stacks a lot easier, especially after a reload has been completed. However, this isn’t reason enough to warrant going for this.
Increase Critical Rate★★★★☆2 – 4xAs a unit with so much self-buffing, and no real need from ammo, she benefits so much from being able to critically strike more often.
Increase Critical Damage★★★★☆2 – 4xAs a unit with so much self-buffing, and no real need from ammo, higher critical damage will really come through for her DPS when she gets lucky.

  1. Sorry for the delay. it was a bit more complicated than usual to write about such an extreme self-buffer.
Note: a revised, massively updated version of the damage formula has been submitted for approval, as it is altering a page that is not my own. Once it is approved, a hyperlink to full damage formula will be enabled for all to see.

EDIT: Hello, all, the damage formula page has been updated: https://nikke.gg/damage-formula/

    • Resources permitting, yes. However, it’s a tough call, as we have Rapi: Red Hood rerun, and whoever the new New Year unit is incoming.
More copies will give xDiesel more base ATK to better make use of more ally and OL ATK multipliers.
At the end of the day, what you do with your resources is up to you.
I hope the free goodies they give out then make it easier, lol.

  2. It’s a good idea to pull copies, or is xDiesel good on its own? The same goes for xBrid
Or is it simply better to save pulls for the future?
